  • 2 medium bananas, peeled and sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup blueberries, washed and drained

Instructions

  1. Wash and prepare your fruit. Rinse the strawberries and blueberries under cold water. Dry them gently with a kitchen towel or paper towel. Hull the strawberries by cutting off the green leafy tops, then slice them lengthwise into thin pieces (about 1/4 inch thick). Peel the bananas and slice into rounds roughly 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Lay out the base layer of your flag. On your platter, arrange the sliced strawberries in three neat rows to form the red stripes. Aim for a neat, slightly overlapping pattern so the fruit covers the platter evenly.
  3. Create the white stripe with banana slices. Next to the strawberry rows, place the banana slices in two rows, slightly overlapping so you have a solid stripe of white. Keep the slices flush against each other to avoid gaps.
  4. Form the blue star section with blueberries. Fill the top-left corner of the flag with a generous handful of blueberries. Spread them evenly in a rectangular shape to mimic the stars’ field.
  5. Final touch and presentation. Adjust any fruit pieces that look out of place. Serve immediately or refrigerate uncovered for up to an hour to keep the fruit fresh but avoid sogginess.

Use ripe but firm fruit to avoid sogginess. Slice bananas last or toss with lemon juice to prevent browning. Keep fruit dry after washing. Assemble close to serving time for best freshness. You can substitute raspberries or red grapes for strawberries, and apple or pear slices for bananas.
