A quick and easy recipe that transforms plain canned baked beans into a smoky, tangy, and sweet BBQ side dish perfect for any cookout or weeknight dinner.

  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) baked beans
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional but recommended)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter

Instructions

  1. Finely chop one small onion and mince a garlic clove (about 5 minutes).
  2. Place a medium skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter. Warm until shimmering but not smoking.
  3. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened and translucent, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add the minced garlic and 1 teaspoon smoked paprika. Stir for 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  5. Stir in 2 tablespoons tomato paste and 1 tablespoon brown sugar. Cook for another minute, allowing the tomato paste to darken slightly and the sugar to dissolve.
  6. Pour in the entire can of baked beans (including the sauce). Stir gently to combine all flavors.
  7. Add 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens and coats the beans.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning with more vinegar or sugar if desired.
  10. Remove from heat and serve warm immediately or keep covered on very low heat until ready.

Notes

Avoid burning garlic by keeping heat moderate. Stir gently to keep beans intact. If sauce is too thick after cooling, add a splash of water or broth when reheating. For more smoky flavor, a tiny splash of liquid smoke can be added carefully. Can be made vegan by using vegan Worcestershire sauce and maple syrup instead of brown sugar.
