These adorable Mummy Meatball Sub Bites are the perfect Halloween appetizer—fun, delicious, and ready in under 30 minutes. Wrapped in flaky crescent dough and brushed with garlic butter, they’re a crowd-pleaser that tastes as good as they look.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (16 ounces) frozen fully cooked meatballs (homestyle or Italian-style)
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough (e.g., Pillsbury)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (freshly shredded preferred)
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce (for dipping and eyes)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 24 candy eyes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, garlic powder, and dried oregano. Set aside.
  3. Open the can of crescent rolls and separate along the perforated lines into 8 triangles. Place on a cutting board.
  4. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut each triangle lengthwise into 3-4 thin strips (about 1/2 inch wide).
  5. Take 3-4 strips of dough and lay them flat. Place one meatball at the end of the strips. Wrap the strips around the meatball, crossing them over like a bandage, leaving a small gap at the top for the face. Press the ends gently into the meatball to secure.
  6. Place the wrapped meatball on the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle a small pinch of shredded mozzarella cheese on top of each one.
  7. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush each mummy with the garlic butter mixture.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Using a small spoon, dab a tiny amount of marinara sauce where the eyes should go. Press a candy eye into each dab of sauce.
  10. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For best results, keep crescent dough chilled until ready to use. Assemble up to 2 hours ahead and refrigerate; add a few extra minutes to baking time. To freeze, assemble unbaked mummies on a baking sheet, freeze solid, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 2 months; bake from frozen, adding 5-7 minutes. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crescent dough or puff pastry strips. For dairy-free, use dairy-free cheese and vegan butter.
