  • 1 can white canned frosting (about 16 oz / 454 g) – Betty Crocker recommended
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Blue gel food coloring
  • Fresh strawberries, sliced (about 1 cup)
  • Fresh blueberries (about 1 cup)
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting or sprinkles for extra flair

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare cake batter according to box instructions, mixing cake mix with eggs, oil, and water until smooth (about 5 minutes).
  2. Pour batter evenly into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack (about 1 hour).
  3. Divide canned frosting into three bowls. Leave one bowl white, tint the second with red gel food coloring, and the third with blue gel food coloring until vibrant colors are achieved.
  4. Spread white frosting evenly over the entire cooled cake as a base layer.
  5. Spoon red frosting in three horizontal stripes across the cake, leaving space between stripes for white frosting to show.
  6. Spread blue frosting into a 3 inch by 3 inch square in the top left corner of the cake (flag canton).
  7. Arrange fresh blueberries neatly within the blue square and place sliced strawberries along the red stripes.
  8. Optionally dust with powdered sugar or add sprinkles. Refrigerate cake for 20-30 minutes before serving to let frosting set slightly.

Notes

Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without thinning frosting. Chill cake before frosting to prevent melting. Work quickly but gently when spreading frosting. Fresh berries add natural sweetness and contrast. If frosting stiffens, warm slightly in microwave for 10-15 seconds. Cake can be baked a day ahead and frosted the next day. Leftovers store well in fridge up to 3 days.
