  • 10 ounces (280 grams) mini marshmallows
  • 3 tablespoons (42 grams) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • ½ cup (75 grams) patriotic red, white, and blue sprinkles
  • Optional: pinch of sea salt
  • Optional: food coloring for layered colors

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large saucepan over low heat, melt 3 tablespoons (42 grams) of unsalted butter, keeping the heat low to avoid browning.
  3. Gradually add 10 ounces (280 grams) of mini marshmallows to the melted butter. Stir constantly with a silicone spatula until completely melted and smooth, about 5 minutes. Avoid overheating.
  4. Remove the pan from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract.
  5. Immediately add 6 cups (150 grams) of Rice Krispies cereal. Stir gently but thoroughly to coat every piece.
  6. Stir in about ½ cup (75 grams) of patriotic sprinkles gently to spread color throughout.
  7. Transfer the sticky mixture to the prepared pan. Using a buttered spatula or lightly greased hands, gently press the mixture evenly into the pan without pressing too hard.
  8. Allow the treats to cool and set at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. Do not refrigerate.
  9. Once set, cut into squares or festive shapes using a sharp, greased knife. Serve immediately or store as desired.

Notes

Use low heat to melt marshmallows to avoid scorching. Press mixture gently to keep treats light and crispy. Let treats set fully before cutting to prevent crumbling. For gluten-free, use certified gluten-free cereal; for dairy-free, substitute butter with coconut oil and use gelatin-free marshmallows.
