Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons black sesame seeds or poppy seeds
  • 8–10 ounces salami or pepperoni slices
  • 6–8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, cubed or sliced
  • 6–8 ounces gouda or havarti, sliced
  • 1 cup assorted olives
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup cornichons or small pickles
  • 1/2 cup roasted red peppers, sliced
  • 1 box (about 8 ounces) assorted crackers
  • 1 baguette, sliced into thin rounds
  • 1/4 cup honey or fig jam
  • Fresh herbs for garnish (rosemary sprigs, thyme, or edible flowers)
  • 12–16 black olives, pitted (halved lengthwise for spider bodies)
  • Pretzel sticks or chow mein noodles (broken into small pieces for spider legs)
  • Small dollops of cream cheese or sour cream (for spider eyes)

Instructions

  1. Make the herbed cream cheese spread: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and completely combined. Stir in the chopped chives if using. Taste and adjust seasoning. Set aside.
  2. Prepare your board: Place your board or platter on a clean work surface. Using an offset spatula or butter knife, spread the cream cheese mixture into an even layer about 1/4 inch thick, leaving about 2 inches of bare board around the perimeter. The shape should be roughly circular or oval.
  3. Create the spiderweb pattern: Spoon the black sesame seeds or poppy seeds into a small bowl. Starting from the center of the cream cheese circle, use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to draw concentric circles outward, spacing them about 1 inch apart (4-5 circles total). Then, draw lines radiating from the center to the edges, like spokes on a wheel, spacing them evenly (8-10 spokes). The seeds will settle into these lines. Gently press any scattered seeds into place with your finger.
  4. Arrange the meats: Fold each salami or pepperoni slice in half, then in half again, creating a small triangle. Place these folded slices around the outer edge of the cream cheese web, tucking them slightly under the edge of the spread. Alternate between folded and flat slices for visual interest.
  5. Add the cheeses: Arrange the cubed cheddar and sliced gouda or havarti around the board, interspersing them with the meat clusters. Place some directly on the bare board and some partially overlapping the edge of the cream cheese web.
  6. Fill in with accompaniments: Place small bowls of olives, cherry tomatoes, cornichons, and roasted red peppers in the empty spaces around the board. Drizzle honey or place a small bowl of fig jam near the cheese. Scatter the crackers and baguette slices around the edges, slightly overlapping them.
  7. Make the spider decorations: Take the halved black olives and place them on the cream cheese web or on the bare board. For each spider, take 8 small pieces of pretzel stick or chow mein noodle and arrange them as legsโ€”4 on each side, slightly bent at the ‘joints’. Use a toothpick to gently press them into the cream cheese or meat to hold them in place. Add two tiny dots of cream cheese on the olive for eyes. Make 4-6 spiders scattered across the board.
  8. Garnish and finish: Tuck fresh rosemary sprigs or thyme around the board for a pop of green. If using edible flowers, scatter a few. Step back and look at your board from a distanceโ€”adjust anything that looks sparse or crowded.
  9. Serve immediately or refrigerate: This board is best served within an hour of assembly. If making ahead, prepare all components separately and assemble just before serving. The cream cheese spread can be made up to 2 days in advance and stored in the refrigeratorโ€”let it come to room temperature before spreading.

Notes

For best texture, ensure cream cheese is at room temperature. Use block cream cheese rather than spreadable tub version for better piping. For a dairy-free option, use vegan cream cheese and sour cream. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crackers and pretzels. The spiderweb design is best when the cream cheese base is smooth and even. Spiders can be assembled up to 4 hours ahead and stored in the refrigerator.
