Ingredients

  • Hot dogs (beef, pork, chicken, or plant-based)
  • Hot dog buns (brioche, white, whole wheat, or gluten-free)
  • Butter or oil for toasting buns
  • Caramelized onions (slow-cooked until golden and sweet)
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Fresh avocado slices or guacamole
  • Spicy mustard (Dijon or whole grain)
  • Relish (sweet or dill)
  • Mango salsa (fresh mango, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt)
  • Crumbled bacon bits
  • Shredded cheddar or pepper jack cheese
  • Coleslaw (creamy or vinegar-based)
  • Fresh herbs (cilantro or parsley)
  • Optional: hot sauce, grilled peppers or mushrooms, olive oil and lemon zest

Instructions

  1. Caramelize onions over medium-low heat with oil or butter for 20-25 minutes until soft and golden.
  2. Prepare mango salsa by dicing mango, red onion, and cilantro; toss with lime juice and salt; let flavors meld.
  3. Slice jalapeños (remove seeds for less heat) and avocado just before serving; drizzle avocado with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  4. Preheat grill to about 400°F (204°C) and brush grates lightly with oil.
  5. Grill hot dogs for 8-10 minutes, turning every 2-3 minutes to achieve a nice char without burning.
  6. In the last 1-2 minutes, brush buns with butter or oil and toast cut-side down on the grill until golden.
  7. Arrange all toppings in separate bowls or plates and keep hot dogs and buns warm in a covered dish or wrapped in foil.
  8. Serve buffet-style allowing guests to build their own hot dog with desired toppings.

Notes

Do not poke holes in hot dogs to keep them juicy. Buttering buns before toasting adds crunch and prevents sogginess. Caramelized onions and some toppings can be prepared a day ahead. Keep avocado fresh by slicing just before serving and drizzling with lemon juice. If no grill is available, use a grill pan or broiler.
