A fast and easy grilled hot dog recipe perfect for last-minute game day snacks, delivering smoky, juicy hot dogs with simple ingredients and minimal fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 all-beef hot dogs
  • 8 soft hot dog buns, lightly toasted
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • Yellow mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Dill pickle relish
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • Cheddar or American cheese slices (optional)
  • Optional toppings: sauerkraut, jalapeños, chili, coleslaw

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat, about 400°F (204°C), for 5–7 minutes until hot enough to sizzle.
  2. Prick each hot dog a few times with a fork to prevent bursting during grilling.
  3. Butter or brush olive oil on the inside of each bun. Toast buns butter-side down on the cooler side of the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden and slightly crisp.
  4. Place hot dogs perpendicular to grill grates and grill for about 10 minutes, turning every 2-3 minutes to get even char marks and a juicy interior.
  5. In the last minute of grilling, add a slice of cheese on each hot dog and close the grill lid to melt it slightly (optional).
  6. Remove hot dogs and buns from the grill. Assemble by placing each hot dog in a bun and adding mustard, ketchup, relish, onions, or any desired toppings.
  7. Serve immediately while buns are warm and slightly crispy.

Notes

Prick hot dogs before grilling to prevent bursting. Toast buns last to keep them from getting soggy. Use tongs to flip hot dogs to keep them juicy. Keep grill clean and at medium-high heat to avoid burning. For indoor cooking, use a grill pan or cast iron skillet.
