A fast and customizable burger bar recipe perfect for busy weeknights and casual gatherings, featuring juicy beef patties and a variety of easy homemade toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds (680g) ground beef, 80/20 blend
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 4 to 6 soft burger buns (brioche or potato buns)
  • Butter, for toasting the buns
  • Cheese slices (cheddar, American, or Swiss)
  • Leafy lettuce (romaine or iceberg)
  • Tomato slices
  • Red onion rings, thinly sliced
  • Pickles (dill or bread and butter)
  • Bacon strips, cooked crispy (optional)
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Mayonnaise
  • Special sauce: mix equal parts mayo, ketchup, and a dash of hot sauce

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly.
  2. Divide mixture into 4 to 6 equal portions (about 6 ounces or 170g each) and shape into round patties slightly wider than buns.
  3. Slice tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. Cook bacon strips until crispy and drain on paper towels. Arrange toppings in small bowls.
  4. Heat skillet over medium heat, add butter, and toast buns cut-side down until golden and crisp, about 1-2 minutes. Set aside.
  5. Heat skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook patties 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese slices during last minute to melt.
  6. Assemble burgers by placing patty with cheese on bottom bun, add desired toppings and sauces, then top with bun.
  7. Serve immediately and encourage customization at the burger bar.

Notes

Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy patties. Avoid pressing patties while cooking to retain juices. Toast buns with butter to prevent sogginess. Prepare toppings ahead to save time. Can substitute ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based patties. Gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps work for gluten-free diets.
