Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds (680g) ground beef, preferably 80/20
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 to 6 burger buns (brioche, potato buns, or classic sesame)
  • Butter for toasting buns (unsalted, softened)
  • Cheese slices (American, cheddar, Colby Jack, or favorite melt)
  • Leafy lettuce (romaine or green leaf, washed and dried)
  • Tomato slices (ripe but firm)
  • Pickles (dill or bread & butter, sliced)
  • Sliced red onions or caramelized onions (optional)
  • Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, or special sauce
  • Optional toppings: crispy bacon strips (pre-cooked), avocado slices, jalapeños or banana peppers, fresh herbs like basil or cilantro

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently by hand for about 3 minutes without overworking the meat.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 to 6 equal portions and shape each into a round patty about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  3. While patties rest for 5 minutes, slice tomatoes, onions, and pickles. Wash lettuce leaves and set out cheese slices and sauces in small bowls to create the burger bar.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium heat and spread butter on the cut side of each bun half. Toast buns until golden and crisp, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  5. Increase skillet heat to medium-high. Cook patties for about 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese slices during the last minute of cooking and cover briefly to melt cheese.
  6. Let patties rest for a minute off heat. Assemble burgers with toasted buns, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, sauces, and any optional toppings.

Notes

Do not over-mix the beef to keep patties tender. Make a small dent in the center of each patty to prevent puffing. Avoid pressing patties while cooking to retain juiciness. Use a meat thermometer for medium doneness at 160°F (71°C). Let patties rest after cooking for best flavor. Precook bacon in the oven to save stove space.
