A fast and customizable one-pan hot dog bar toppings recipe that brings flavor and fun to busy weeknight dinners. Perfect for families and adaptable to various dietary needs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 regular or beef hot dogs (or turkey/plant-based for lighter or meat-free option)
  • 8 soft hot dog buns, lightly toasted
  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons pickle relish
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice 1 large sweet onion and 1 medium green bell pepper; set aside.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter; warm for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add sliced onions and peppers to the skillet; sprinkle with ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Sauté vegetables for 7-8 minutes until onions are soft and golden and peppers are tender but slightly crisp.
  5. Stir in 3 tablespoons yellow mustard and 2 tablespoons ketchup; cook for 2 more minutes to create a tangy glaze.
  6. Push veggies to one side of the pan; place 8 hot dogs on the empty side and cook, turning every few minutes, for 6-8 minutes until browned.
  7. Optional: Push hot dogs aside and toast buns cut-side down in the pan for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  8. Remove hot dogs and buns from pan; spoon mustard-glazed onions and peppers over each hot dog.
  9. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top if using; let it melt slightly from residual heat.
  10. Finish with 2 tablespoons pickle relish spread over the hot dogs and serve immediately.

Notes

If veggies stick or brown too fast, lower heat and add a splash of water. Avoid overcrowding the pan; cook in batches if needed. Toast buns in the pan for added texture. For vegan or gluten-free options, swap hot dogs and buns accordingly. Adding cheese last prevents greasiness. Leftover toppings taste better after a day refrigerated.
