These Spooky White Chocolate Witch Finger Pretzel Rods are absurdly fun to make, come together faster than you’d think, and genuinely fool people for a second. The salty pretzel, sweet white chocolate, and crunchy almond create a classic combo dressed up in its Halloween best.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 standard bag (about 12 ounces or 340 grams) pretzel rods
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) white chocolate melting wafers or almond bark
  • ยผ cup (30 grams) sliced almonds
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Green food coloring (optional)
  • Black sanding sugar or edible glitter (optional)
  • Pretzel crumbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep your workspace. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Have all ingredients out and ready.
  2. Melt the white chocolate. Place white chocolate melting wafers or chopped almond bark into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring well after each interval, until smooth. If adding green food coloring, add a tiny drop after the second interval and stir until evenly distributed.
  3. Test the chocolate consistency. Dip a pretzel rod into the melted chocolate and lift it out. The chocolate should coat the pretzel smoothly and drip off slowly. If too thick, add a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable shortening and stir. If too thin, let it cool for a minute and stir again.
  4. Dip the pretzels. Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip it into the melted chocolate, leaving about an inch undipped at the top. Lift the pretzel out and let the excess chocolate drip back into the bowl. Place the dipped pretzel onto the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining pretzels, spacing them about an inch apart.
  5. Add the fingernails. While the chocolate is still wet, take a sliced almond and press it gently onto the tip of the pretzel rod. Position it so it looks like a fingernailโ€”slightly curved, pointing outward. Angle it slightly to the left or right for a more natural look.
  6. Create the knuckles. Use a toothpick or the tip of a small knife to gently press horizontal lines into the chocolate along the length of the pretzel. Make two or three lines per finger, spaced unevenly. Don’t press too hard.
  7. Add the ‘blood’ details. Dip a toothpick into the red gel food coloring. Dab a tiny amount at the base of the finger (the undipped part of the pretzel) and let it smear slightly. Add a tiny dab near the fingernail for a ‘hangnail’ effect.
  8. Add optional decorations. If using black sanding sugar or pretzel crumbs, sprinkle them on while the chocolate is still wet.
  9. Chill to set. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm and set.
  10. Finishing touches. Once the chocolate is set, remove the baking sheet from the refrigerator. If desired, melt a small amount of additional white chocolate and drizzle it over the fingers for a ‘dried blood’ effect, or use the red gel to add a few more drops. Let any additional decorations set at room temperature for a few minutes.

Notes

Don’t overheat the chocolateโ€”use 50% power in the microwave. Work in small batches to keep the chocolate at the right consistency. Keep your hands clean to avoid fingerprints on the white chocolate. The almond fingernail should be positioned with the pointed end facing outward. Practice knuckle lines on parchment paper first. Transport on the baking sheet to avoid breakage. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
